From the time I got my first cell phone to the present day as I’m sitting here writing this blog, I’ve always had a case and a screen protector on every single one of my phones. This is because in today’s modern world, it’s almost impossible to live without a cell phone so both cases and screen protectors play a vital role in preventing your phone and you whole word from breaking. But, as I was sitting down one day looking at my phone, I had a thought coming into my head, are these two protective items even effective or do we just buy them to make us feel safe about our phone’s safety. So today, I wanted to share my research with you and answer this question!

QUICK BROKEN PHONE STATISTICS

So phone screens can be easily prone to breaking especially when dropped, here are 5 facts that will hopefully stress the seriousness of this issue:

  1. 72% of People have Broken a Phone
  2. The Average Time from Purchase to Break is Approximately 10 Weeks
  3. In the U.S, 2 Phone Screens are Broken Every Second
  4. 74% of Smartphone Damage is Caused by the Phone Dropping on the Ground
  5. Men are more likely to break phones than women

ARE SCREEN PROTECTORS AS EFFECTIVE AS ADVERTISED?

When doing research on this topic, I learned some important details about the function and effectiveness of both accessories as well some crucial facts that I think we all should be aware of. The first being that screen protectors are only a partial solution to phone protection. This is because most broken screens result from impact on the corners and edges of the phone while screen protectors only shield against the cellphone’s face. When a smartphone’s corners or edges hit the ground, the impact is in a concentrated area which is more likely to cause shattering, whereas if it had fallen face down on the ground, the vicinity of the structural damage to the phone would likely be larger but with a lower risk of screen damage. However, screen protectors are not totally useless. In fact, they are very effective at protecting against scratches which are very common and overtime, weaken the structural integrity of a display and may eventually lead to large cracks. Thus, while you can’t expect them to save your phone if you drop it, at such an inexpensive price, they are a great long term solution to preventing cracks and I would highly recommend the, 3 Pack LK Screen Protector for Iphone XS/X/11 Pro, 3 Pack LK Screen Protector for Iphone XR and 11 and the JETech 3-Pack Screen Protector for iPhones SE 2020/8/ 7/6. For Samsung, I would recommend the Spigen NeoFlex Protector for the S8, the Uniqueme 3D Tempered Glass for the S9, Lk 2 Pack Screen Protector for the S10 and finally the Mp-Mall TPU Screen Protector for the S20.

WHY PHONE CASES ARE A MUST-HAVE

A phone case is absolutely essential if you’re looking to protect your phone from damage. This is because it protects the most vulnerable areas on the phone such as the corners, the edges and the back, which has all the wiring in it. This makes a case an optimal option because it will likely prevent your phone from cracking and will reduce the damage to your phone’s structural integrity in cases of it dropping. Also, for the ideal amount of protection, be sure to choose a case made of a shock-absorbent material (like silicone or rubber) instead of plastic cases, which do not effectively do the job. For IPhones, I would recommend the DUEDUE Shockproof Case for the 7, 8 and the SE, the ORETech Silicone Case for the XR, the GuaGua Shockproof Case for X and the XS and finally the ORNARTO Silicone Case for the 11. For the Samsung, I would recommend the Seacosmo Clear Bumper Case for the S8, the Spigen Liquid Air Works for the S9, the Spigen Tough Armour Works for the S10 and the SUMKUMY Crystal Clear Case for the S20.

BOTTOM LINE

To sum everything up, both screen protectors and phone cases are great accessories that keep your phone safe from damage. When it comes down to it, having both on your phone would be ideal because they both will work together to significantly reduce the short and long term risk of shattering and scratches. However, if it for some reason comes down to choosing between one of them, a phone case should be picked every single time. I would highly recommend that you to buy a case on Amazon or Ebay as they are both reliable sources with a large catalogue of products.
